nbc 10 breaking news. we are following breaking news from france, paris is waking up to the aftermath of a series of deadly coordinated terrorist attacks, complete coverage of what happened while you were sleeping is coming up. good morning, i'm rosemary connors. let's get right to it. paris is shut down this morning as the country is in the state of emergency. french authorities believe all eight attackers are dead, police are looking for anymore possible accomplices in the area. at least 120 people have died. about 100 of them were killed during shootings and suicide bombings inside a concert hall where an american band was performing. the french president declared

state of emergency while the country is now tightening borders with extra security. earlier today, they urged everyone to stay inside for their open safety. we are monitoring developments from europe and washington, george? >> yes, they are starting the day after six hours ahead of us in the face of clearly coordinated attacks at multiple sites in their historic city. on the ground, it was successive explosions and shootings at three different types of locatio locations. look at the cell phone video capturing the panic outside the soccer game in paris where the suicide bombers attacks. the french president was in attendance and quickly rushed out of the stadium. meanwhile, other attacks occurred in caves in paris with gunmen mowing down victims, and another was a concert at the time where terrorists took

hostages by the dozens, killing many of them. last night, president obama vowed american support for the french people and for their leaders. >> to provide whatever assistance that the government and the people of france need to respond. >> the undetected, but sophisticated nature of the attacks in paris will give u.s. counterterrorism officials pause. >> reporter: in the wake of the attacks, france went into a virtual lockdown, police flooding the streets and eventually regained control. the terrorists in the theater blew themselves up. the latest information we're getting this morning from the french president is the number 127, that is how many people he says died in these coordinated attacks. at this point, we're learning about the french intelligence that may have proceeded the attack. we know that a number of american cities are increasing their own security here at home in the wake of this devastation.

obviously, we're going to be following this this morning. stay with the nbc 10 and news app for continuing updates. we'll be back shortly. rosemary, back to you. thank you, the attacks in paris have a ripple effect in u.s. and philadelphia. the french consulate in sent every city is boosting security as well as french embassies and consulates in other parts of the world. there's no known threat to philadelphia or the u.s., but police are stepping up security to places like lincoln financial field where the eagles play on sunday. last night, we spoke with a bar owner in center city from france, just returning from a visit to his home country last weekend and spent last night checking on his friends and family. he was unaware of what happened until we spoke to him. he says he can't believe a large scale attack was carried out in paris.

>> crime against humanity is going on too many times in too many places. >> homeland security experts say to expect higher levels of security around the airports and train stations in the coming days. the department has lines set up if you are concerned for a loved one in paris. three people died in the explosions outside the soccer stadium. inside, chaos. take a look, this video comes from a philadelphia man who was there. he says parents were on the ground trying to cover their children. eventually, stadium security guards ushered the crowd on the field, as you see there and had them wait for the all clear. the american rock band, eagles of death metal was performing in paris when gunmen fired into the crowd and began taking hostages. ♪ >> this is one of the band's

the sound of strength and resilience in the face of the paris terrorist attacks, fans saying the french national anthem last night after the attacks leaving the stadium outside paris. they were held on lockdown for hours after multiple explosions just outside during the match of the french and german national soccer teams. here's the information on the worst terrorist attack in french history. we learned the french president is now blaming isis militants for the attack calling it an act of war. police in paris believe all those responsible are dead. investigators are looking for

skies, mix of sun and clouds throughout the day, more sun than clouds. 24 hours ago, we were 10 degrees warmer compared to this time yesterday, and looking at temperatures mainly in the 40s. 44 in philadelphia, 43 in lancaster, and along the coast, looking at temperatures also in the 40s, 44 in atlantic city, and 45 in dover, delaware. colds start to the day. we'll see the winds gusting throughout the day. right now, they are anywhere from 15 to 16 miles per hour, up to 12 miles per hour in northern philadelphia, but they are gusting higher than that, and we're going to see winds gusting 30-35 miles per hour throughout the day. you probably heard them as you went to bed last night. wind gusting at 25 miles per hour in reading this morning, and 20 miles per hour in allentown. as we go throughout the day, we're going/o! toçó look at a m sun, clouds, cold, windy

we continue to follow breaking news from paris. the french president giving a statement moments ago, and george spencer is here to fill us in. george? >> we have significant new information from this update. the french president has just said french intelligence is not really indicating the attacks were carried out by an islamic state group. they described the attacks as, quote, an act of war. it was during that same update he gave the newest number on that death toll. the death toll he now says

stands at 127 souls. he says these attacks were orchestrated and planned from abroad. he's now declaring three days of national mourning coinciding from what we reported, rosemary, the idea that french national sites are closed today. obviously, given the attack on the soccer stadium there, americans here at home will be watching our big weekend sports events very closely. >> that's right, we know there's increased security at lincoln financial field for the eagles tomorrow. >> similar story, really, nfl games, other games nationwide through the weekend. >> anyone headed to any games, keep that in mind. >> absolutely. >> thank you, george, see you soon for another update. we are following news in the u.s., one person dead this morning after a ruptured natural gas line exploded in rural central california yesterday. the gas line was cut by someone using heavy equipment in a farm

field. the person operating the machinery died. two people received second degree and third degree burns when their house caught on fire after the explosion. it was a pivotal moment in modern philadelphia history. a listening device found in the mayor's office, sueded an election, and now for the first time, the fbi in charge of placing the bug is telling the story, and only to the nbc 10 investigators. reporter mitch blocker sat down with that agent. 12 years ago, fbi special agent was asked to bug a sitting mayor's office to know if bribes were used to get city contracts. the fbi got more than it bargained for. the scandal stole the headlines away from a close mayoral race. less than one month before the election, the mayor john street was down in the polls to republicans sam cant, and then tipped off by a source, the

mayor's staff had swept the office. they found a bug. what few knew in the fall of 2003, the fbi worked for months to listen in on conversations inside street's office. >> our reduuse, if you will, we were doing a security survey post 9/11. >> the special agent was tasked with putting bugs in place, but, first, he had to see the layout of the mayor's office, touring city hall in august 2003 under the pretense of national security. >> i wanted to see what did the mayor's office look like, was there a drop ceiling? what was the furniture? what were the locks on the door? did we see alarms, things like that. >> reporter: then draws this sketch of the mayor's office using it to place two bugs, but there were still concerns. >> we didn't know if there would be people, maintenance people or security people who, like, just be checking on the mayor's office as matter of routine. we didn't know if that was the case. >> reporter: the fbi risked it on saturday, september 20th,

2003, he and two other agents snuck into city hall and broke into the office. >> this is the key. >> he keeps the key the team cut that night. >> were you surprised the key opened all the doors? >> yes. actually, we were. surprise there was no alarm or security. >> reporter: once inside, there was a device in the drop ceiling by a couch, the other, by a table in front of the window. >> we were wrapping up, getting everything installed, and we got word from surveillance teams that the mayor was on the move, and looked like he might be headed back towards city hall. >> reporter: hfs nearly midnight, but street was headed to the office from a nundraiser. the agents got out just in time. >> we were walking out one entrance of city hall, and he walked in the other. >> reporter: the job seemed no different than other assignments. how many times have you installed listening devices in

offices in places you investigate? >> dozens. >> how many found? >> one. >> reporter: the philadelphia police found the bug in the ceiling on october 7th, 2003. he says the fbi knew police were going to sweep the office. he says he wanted the bugs out before they were found. >> there was a possibility, i think, that we could have gone in and removed our equipment, but the decision was made higher than me. the decision was made to not do that. >> reporter: philadelphia politics would never be the same. street's staff quickly stirred the political pot. >> philadelphia has been targeted by the national rom party to being key to george w. bush's re-election hopes. >> i knew the truth. preposterous to say the white house on the other handed us to bug a sitting mayor's office, but, you know, i couldn't say that publicly it was preposterous. >> i thought we were going to win. i thought it was the nail in the

coffin. >> this askffected street's opponents. >> i was up six to down 14 barely moving my lips. >> reporter: it was the third time katz ran for mayor, the closest he got, and decade later, he questions the fbi's role. >> what did they think about putting it? ? hope to be lucky? >> what's more disappointing to me personally than the device found is the effect that it had on the election. >> reporter: he never expected to be at the center of a scandal that shaped today's philadelphia. like so many of the cases he worked, he thought he would be a forgot p footnote when it was over. >> wish it was never found, and if i i could do it differently, i wish i could. >> reporter: there's 24 convictions in the paid to play investigati investigation, but the bug in street's office never used information picked up in trial, and street was never convicted of a crime.

the conviction led to sweeping political reforms in philadelphia like campaign contribution limits and city's board of ethics. for the investigators, i'm nbc 10 news. well, the cold start to the day, also windy, you heard the winds howling last night, and there's winds all day long, gusting to 25 miles per hour and 30 miles per hour at times. along with temperatures in the upper 40s, 50, going to feel like the 40s all day long. weather headlines on saturday morning, a blustery day, cold, windy, and chilly on sunday, not as cold as today, but still chilly at 59, 60 degrees as a high on sunday. we'll warm up midweek. some temperatures back close to 70 degrees thursday. right now, though, 44 in philadelphia, wind west at 15 miles per hour, and 11 degrees colder compared to this time yesterday. that's a trend in the area. right now, mainly in the 40s, some spots in the 30s, 44 in

all allentown, and 44 in philadelphia. south and east, temperatures in the 40s as well. 45 in dover. 42 in millville, new jersey. it's a cold start. chilly throughout the day with temperatures topping out at 49, 50 degrees. you can see the wind blowing, blowing that flag around, and the winds will be with us all day long. winds now 15-20 miles per hour. gusting higher than that. sustained winds in mount pocono at 20 miles per hour, 15 in philadelphia, 10 miles per hour in atlantic city. it's a northwest flow bringing in cold air, what we're waking up to this morning. winds gusting 36 miles per hour in mount pocono. there's flurries in the northwest. the highest elevations could see flurries this morning. that's about it. something to mention on this saturday morning as well as the winds, feeling winter-like there.

there's the big weather headline, wind. tonight, mostly clear, dropping temperatures into the 30s tonight north and west, 37 in philadelphia. chilly again on sunday. not as chilly, but around 59 degrees. today, it's 49-52, winds gusting at 30 miles per hour. there's your cold temperatures tonight, freezing mark north and west, 37 in philadelphia. winds west at 5-10 miles per hour. the winds relax a little bit tonight, although, it's breezy sunday. 51 today. tomorrow, 60 degrees after a cold start, sunday, sunshining, 64, and clouds, wednesday, it's warmer at 63 and shower arrives late wednesday and thursday, thursday, chance of showers as well, 68, and breezy with the leftover shower friday and 62. it's judgment day.
